An X-ray spectrum has two quite different features: a broad continuous hump and a few tall sharp spikes. This simulation separates the two mechanisms and shows how each responds when you change the voltage or the target material.

- The continuous spectrum cuts off sharply at the maximum energy set by the voltage
- Characteristic line positions depend on the target element, never on the voltage
- Below a threshold voltage the characteristic lines vanish entirely
La physique derrière
Bremsstrahlung produces the continuous background as electrons decelerate in the target, with a sharp cutoff at the maximum photon energy eV. Characteristic lines appear when an incoming electron knocks out an inner-shell electron and an outer electron drops in to fill the gap, emitting a photon of energy fixed by that element's level spacing.
