Two equal forces pushing in opposite directions cancel out โ€” yet the object still spins. This simulation shows why a couple produces pure rotation with no net force, and why its turning effect does not depend on where you measure it from.

A couple is a pair of equal, opposite, parallel forces whose lines of action do not coincide. The resultant force is zero, so there is no acceleration of the centre of mass, but the moment is Fd, where d is the perpendicular distance between the lines. That moment is the same about every point, which is why a couple produces rotation without translation.
