A single-coil motor delivers torque in uneven pulses and stalls at the dead points. Adding more coils around the armature fixes both problems, and running this simulation alongside the single-coil version makes the improvement obvious in the torque trace.

A física por trás

Torque on one coil follows τ = BIAN·cosθ, falling to zero when the coil plane is perpendicular to the field. With several coils set at different angles, one is always well-placed to produce torque, so the total never drops to zero. The commutator switches each coil in turn as it passes through its optimum position.
