Inside a Solid Conductor — Copper – Eletricidade e magnetismo

The metallic bond built in 3D: a lattice of Cu⁺ cores held to their neighbours, with the sea of free electrons swimming in the gaps between them. The cores vibrate about fixed sites and never leave; the electrons race in every direction and get nowhere until a field adds a lean.

A física por trás

Each copper atom gives up its single outer electron to a shared sea, leaving a lattice of Cu⁺ cores bound by their attraction to that sea — the metallic bond. The cores are fixed to their sites and can only oscillate about them, with an amplitude that grows as the square root of the absolute temperature. The delocalised electrons belong to the metal as a whole rather than to any atom, which is exactly what makes copper conduct: the carriers are already free and everywhere before any field is applied.
